The next generation Suzuki Swift has been spotted testing abroad for the first time. Codenamed YED, the fourth-generation Swift will be based on the modified Heartect platform with improved safety standards. The next-generation Swift is expected to be revealed sometime next year considering that the current iteration is around 6 years old. However, we don’t expect it to make its way to our shores anytime before 2024.

As seen in the spy shots, the next generation Swift will grow up in size. In fact, some reports suggest that the new Swift will be longer than 4-meters. However, the Indian version will be under 4-metres for the sub-4 meter tax benefits. The hood seems to be much smoother than the current generation’s and also has a different cutout. A small cutout in the front gives us a peek at the restyled LED projector headlamps and LED DRLs. It also gets a large grille which will most likely get a chrome treatment for the Indian model. Moving to the side, one can notice the ORVMs which have been carried over from the current model.

It also features a swoopy roofline and we expect it to come in contrasting color options. It gets a new design for the 16-inch alloy wheels which look similar to the wheels seen on the second generation model. One interesting bit is that the rear door handles have now moved to the conventional spot as opposed to the current model which has its handle placed on the C-pillar. The rear is heavily camouflaged and doesn’t reveal much. However, it will feature redesigned LED taillamps and a more trapezoidal rear windshield. The interiors will be heavily revamped as well with the use of better materials and more equipment. Expect it to feature Suzuki’s Smartplay Pro+ infotainment system and Suzuki Connect technology. It will also be more spacious and have a more accommodating boot.

In terms of powertrain, the new Swift will be powered by the familiar 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine which is called K12N. This engine features an integrated starter generator which adds the auto engine start/stop functionality to save more fuel. It produces 89hp and 113nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and an AMT. However, it could come with an additional 48v battery making it a mild hybrid to comply with emission norms. It could also feature a hybrid powertrain which will be jointly developed with Toyota.
